The Dampier strait was designated as a MPA in 2009 and a shark sanctuary in 2013 following the tremendous efforts from Conservation international and TNC to eradicate destructive fisheries from Raja Ampat waters.
The Dampier strait MPA is part of a wider network of MPAs aiming at protecting the incredible biodiversity of the Raja ampat Archipelago.
The local community is distributed in 9 villages around the strait and relies mostly on traditional fishing practices for subsistence.
Underwater, the Dampier Strait shelters a wide variety of sharks, rays, marine mammals and an incredible diversity of corals, fish and marine creatures.
The perfect place to study marine ecosystems and achieve field based conservation.
